A Semester of a Different Color

It's the beginning of a new semester. I always greet the first day with a mix of excitement and apprehension; everyone does in college, from instructors to students to staff. If you've never been to college, it's like the first day of school, two to three times a year or more. I've been at my job over ten years now, and each new semester is its own. I never know if I'm going to walk into a war zone right away or I'll sit bored for an hour or so. Fall is often like a war zone, with hundreds of cars in the parking lots by 7:15, students, staff, and faculty all milling around in the atriums and halls, the noise level is sometimes deafening and by the time you get the last bite of your breakfast, it's time to order lunch. Spring, however, is more like the calm before the storm that peters out before it reaches you. The parking is at a premium, the atriums and hallways are still bustling at certain times, and it's wise to get breakfast out of the way as soon as you can, but it doesn't start as early on the first day, which is the Tuesday after MLK Day. Also, like any other school beginning, it's full of people who come from different walks of life with different needs and ideals; some are just precious and new, others have been here and done this, still others are just new to the campus; but we do have a few who are not agreeable or capable of making their way.

So here's to all those starting a new semester - instructors, students, staff. I hope we all have a wonderful semester. Just remember, it's only six weeks to Spring Break!
